Gravesham in Bloom – Trash To Treasure

GiB-hero

The Trash to Treasure project is series of community participatory artist led creative workshops to create coastal and recycling themed temporary art installations for Gravesham in Bloom 2015.

The aim of the project is to engage the community into the Gravesham in Bloom themes through a high quality and inspiring arts experience. LV21’s workshop programme focuses on working in collaboration with stakeholders such as council staff, volunteers and chosen community groups to create functional, temporary art interventions in key locations to support the overall project. In addition, LV21’s shipmate artists provide practical information to share skills and inspire participants to develop further interventions and installations using a variety of recycled materials in their own allocated locations along the project trail.

Focus for the artwork includes:

  • Tyre Art
    Upcycling old tyres into nautically themed planters mainly located around the two identified town centre car parks;
    Tyres transformed into nautical, ground installed planters such as varying sized anchors, boats, waves, stripy lighthouses, pebbles, sea shells, fish, sea creatures, a magical underwater scene…
  • Bicycle wheels & tyres
    Upcycling old bicycle parts (especially spoke wheels and tyres) to form parts of / link in with the car tyre planters;
    Bicycle wheels transformed into wind powered whirligigs / pinwheels and floral shapes, wind chimes, sundials…
  • Wooden pallets
    Upcycling used freight pallets to create planting structures fitting to the nautical theme;
    Pallets transformed into vertical garden planters, trellis structure, pier / raft theme, beach signage displaying nautical phrases…

Participants also had an opportunity to create vinyl designs for window/hoarding displays.
